Children and young people have important views on climate and nature, and it is important that their rights are respected.
Here’s how young people can take part:
Young people who are aged 12 can respond to the online survey.
Children who are younger than 12 can respond with the permission of a parent or carer.
Teachers or organisations can reply on behalf of a class or a school.

YOUNG ECO HERO AWARD
Youth-led campaigning on climate change has already had a big impact on politicians and decision makers.
Children and young people did not cause the climate emergency but are living with its consequences.
I was delighted that during COP26 that hundreds of Central Scotland’s young people got involved through my online and in-person #TheMoment surgeries to discuss their concerns and ideas. Their voices must be heard and I intend the voices of children to be prominent in my ecocide bill.
This section and the accolade of ‘Young Eco Hero’ highlights some of the wonderful acts of kindness to our planet that so often go unrecognised – young people are powerful at reminding adults why it is so vitally important that we act now to stop the damage to our world, and that every action taken is a step in the right direction.
If you know someone you think should be recognised as a Young Eco Hero please get in touch: [email protected]

June 2024: Hilltop Primary
It was my pleasure to raise a Parliamentary Motion recently congratulating Hilltop Primary School in Airdrie on winning Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Litter League top accolade in a litter picking competition for youngsters across Scotland.
The Litter League competition forms part of the charity’s annual #Springcleanscotland challenge and this inspirational group of pupils carried out two clean-ups where they collected an impressive 83 bags of litter, which ‘bagged’ them the title of National Champions 2024 – just one year after winning the Regional title in 2023!
It’s the continued efforts of young people such as the pupils from Hilltop Primary that makes such a big difference tackling the damage litter is doing to local communities and the environment. Congratulations to you all on all your hard work and effort!

November 2023: Latifa Yakubu
It is wonderful to work with young people committed to promoting and advocating for ecocide law and Latifa’s keen interest in climate change made her an excellent panellist at the recent consultation launch for my proposed Ecocide (Prevention) (Scotland) Bill when she delivered a powerful speech discussing the importance of preventing further environmental damage in Scotland.
A S6 pupil from St John Ogilvie High School, Latifa is Vice Chairperson of South Lanarkshire Council’s Youth Forum on Climate Change and Sustainability. In October 2022 Latifa helped organise a Conference of Schools (COS1) for primary pupils, delivering exciting activities to teach primary pupils about how to live more sustainability using the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle; she is an great ambassador for the future of our planet.

August 2023: St. Patrick's Primary & Nursery Eco-Committee
I was delighted to raise a Parliamentary Motion recently congratulating St Patrick’s Primary and Nursery in Coatbridge on winning Eco-Committee of the Year in the 2023 Eco-Schools Awards - the first ever Eco-Committee Award organised by environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful.
This pupil-led Eco-Committee is a motivated group of all ages which meets twice a month to come up with innovative ways they can help the environment. The pupils set up a pop-up Sustainable Fashion Shop after learning about the impact of fashion on the aquatic environment and they inform the school community to help them make positive decisions such as walking to school to reduce road pollution.

June 2023: Caylie McKenzie
Seven-year-old Caylie McKenzie from Kilsyth is respected in her community as a young climate activist. I met with Caylie in May 2023 and it was such a joy to see her enthusiasm for recycling and caring for animals.
Her passion for wildlife and the environment motivates her to spend her free-time litter picking, making her a positive role model for other young people and adults locally as she strives to educate people on climate change and show even the little things we do can help make a difference.
In April 2023 Caylie raised more than £700 for Strathcarron Hospice in Denny as a thank you for taking care of a family member, she did this through a sponsored litter-pick; a big achievement that shows Caylie’s desire to help others and protect our beautiful planet.
