The Stage 1 debate allowed MSPs to consider the Ecocide (Scotland) Bill in full, with contributions reflecting a wide range of views on the need for stronger protections against severe environmental harm. Following the debate, MSPs voted to support the Bill’s general principles, allowing it to progress in Parliament.

What happens next?

The Ecocide (Scotland) Bill now moves to Stage 2 of the parliamentary process, where amendments can be proposed and the detail of the legislation carefully examined and refined.
This is a crucial moment to show there is strong public, civic, and cross-sector support for laws that protect Scotland’s environment and hold the worst polluters to account.

Take action:

You can help by emailing your local MSP to ask them to support the Bill as it moves through Parliament, or by sharing why ecocide laws matter to you on social media.
